"What owes the space to the silence? Still not sure" 2011
(video projection, neon light and writing)
Clemence de La Tour du Pin is a French artist currently working in Berlin. Her performative installations "become messy monuments to their own creative process," capturing elements of the everyday, with found materials and familiar themes recurring throughout the spaces she manipulates.
At the midpoint of the Mica Moca project at this location, Clemence de la Tour du Pin presents an animation which refers to the ephemeral nature of such art projects. With Berlin changing and getting more commercially developed, she questions whether the possibilities it offers to artists will still be available in the future.

Portrait Arrows by Karl Addison & James Bullough for Playground Berlin Weekend at Mica Moca21.07.2011, 18:33 | vor 309 Tagen
A collaboration art installation by James Bullough & Karl Addison for Playground Berlin Weekend at Mica Moca. An international selection of artists has been invited to conceive site specific work for the Mica Moca building, a former safe factory in the working class district Berlin Wedding.
James’s work explores the balance between contrasting elements. Abstract graffiti inspired backgrounds live with color and texture are met with intensely realistic images. Highly rendered portraits float atop layers of ambient space and geometric forms. Contemporary street art techniques and materials collide with those of the realist oil painters James admires.
Addison’s purpose (it seems) is three-fold: to amuse us the first time we discover one of his pieces, to draw us in—inviting us to take a closer look, and to make us stop and see every minute detail—and in a sense, to stop and see him.

For the "von und zu" performance which Paul Polaris presented at Kunstverein Zurich she worked with objects covered in wood-, marble,- and steel-like material and experimented with their sounds and meaning. She has now developed this idea into a cooperation with the two musicians Tobias von Glenck & Martin Lorenz and their project Trabant Echo. With e-bass and turntables they improvise on classical music samples, "imitating" acoustic instruments and thereby generate new sounds. Jointly the three artists explore their aim to work on fragile moments, creating a dense carpet of sounds, movements and images.

An international selection of artists has been invited to conceive site specific work for the Mica Moca building, a former safe factory in the Berlin Wedding. From subtle architectonic interventions, to participatory performances, to installations made from found materials to projections; many of the invited artists have ample experience creating informal ephemeral installations for Berlin's much quoted „temporary spaces“ - the city's special post-Wall situation of limitless derelict space, small means, and a lack of professional art structures has created the setting for what has become an art historic niche for independent artists.

Gallery Weekend at LA54 - May 28th 201125.05.2011, 20:33 | vor 366 Tagen
In “a Berlin torn between its anti-market roots and the increasing dominance of commercial galleries, between general gentrification and preserving pockets of its Bohemian spirit” we can still find adventurous art projects like those taking place at the atmospheric environment of the Old Brewery at Landsberger Allee 54 in Friedrichshain. For how long is unclear; after having been let down by the Senat of Berlin in its quest for recognition as an artist’s house, the site is currently the object of the fantasies of possible new investors.
Against all odds, and fully self-supporting, the art spaces G11, 91 MQ, Marzia Frozen, KunstKliniKum and Kunstraum Richard Sorge continue to present cutting edge exhibitions that would not be possible in this way in any other place in Berlin.

In May 2011 Kunstraum Richard Sorge presents Jens Kloppmann's "slachten". Opening on the historically significant date of May 8th, the day of German capitulation in WWII, the solo exhibition by the noted Berlin-based conceptual artist thematizes war.
The main piece of "slachten" will be a large mural work made out of fretwork. Hundreds of painstakingly hand cut figures will be installed by the artist, amounting to a huge ornamental "war painting". Liberally using and recombining familiar silhouettes and vignetters from our collective memory, art history, and war reportage, Kloppmann depicts a broad panorama of war in all its stages: attack, counter attack, displacement.
A selection from Kloppmann's Bulllet Boulevard series will also be on view; gypsum replicas of war damages taken from facades of the cityscape of Berlin.

Kunstraum Richard Sorge is the setting for a photography exhibition that maps the complex area between empathy and exploitation, identification and voyeurism.
According to the Urban Dictionary, “streeple” denominates street people. The show’s photographers view their subjects as protagonists, not models; they are chosen and documented for what they are, and not brought to play any kind of role. Photographed (or casted) in the streets, they (and we, the viewers) are made aware of their specialness.
Placed at the center of attention, the protagonists are drawn into a dialog with the [..]
Exhibition: Mehdi-Georges Lahlou - Les Talons d'Allah03.09.2010, 18:42 | vor 630 Tagen
Born of a Christian mother and Muslim father, Brussels-based French-Moroccan artist Mehdi-Georges Lahlou learned early on the value of relativism. The theme of crossing boundaries set by culture, religion and gender is present in all of his installations and performances. While his works appears at first sight political, for instance tackling Orientalism and gender issues in Islam, it is important to the artist that it be viewed first and foremost as an open, poetic autobiographical gesture to be judged on art's own terms.
The artist draws not only on the history of performance and installation-art, but also incorporates references to Belgian Surrealism in his works. In Lahlou's art we find humor, poetics, guts, dedication, refined artistic intuition, personal risk taking and social relevance.

Everything to More - drawings and murals by Hiroki Otsuka - November 28, 2009 - January 16, 2010
Kunstraum Richard Sorge presents "Everything to More," New York based Japanese artist Hiroki Otsuka's first solo show in Europe featuring drawings and murals.

One day later, November 28, the murals and drawings of Otsuka's one-man show at Kunstraum Richard Sorge will be unveiled. The exhibition extends the themes of Kawaii, saturation and alienation into the realm of shifting and dark sexuality.
In his drawings and paintings, Otsuka makes an elegant transition from erotic Manga to disturbing fine art, applying intriguing gender [..]

The highly collectible October 2009 issue of Sleekmag on Berlin People and Berlin Places is a perfect guide to the new Berlin "borderground" where bohemia, beauty and brains collide in an orgy of hedonism and totally unjustified optimism.
An extensive report in the print edition of the luxurious magazine recommends Kunstraum Richard Sorge and pictures the Dream Watching show by Gert-Jan Akerboom.
"Berlin People" is quite a good piece capturing (and exemplifying?) the glamorous and self-gratulatory nature of Berlin's "expat art scene" (the phrase seems to always mean just the UK/US expats though). It is just so cool not to speak German..

Dream Watching Exhibition Review at Berliner Zeitung13.07.2009, 15:41 | vor 1047 Tagen
"... gezeigt werden schwarz-weiße Tuschezeichnungen und großformatige Wandmalereien, die zugleich assoziativ und präzise sind - ersteres in der Verbindung von Objekten und Architektur-Bruchstücken in einem kühlen virtuellen Raum, letzteres in der obsessiv genauen Ausführung, die einen unweigerlich tiefer und tiefer in diese Welten hineinzieht."
