In December 2011, according to preliminary data of ‘border statistics’, exports and imports at current prices rose by 10.1% and 5.1%, year-on-year (y-o-y), respectively. The trade balance ended in a surplus of CZK 10.5 bn, which was by CZK 10.4 bn more compare to December 2010. In the year 2011, exports and imports were up by 13.2% and 10.9% respectively. The annual trade balance was active and amounted to CZK 191.4 bn, which was by CZK 70.2 bn more than in 2010.

Q4 2011, the number of guests’ overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments increased by 3.1% year-on-year, of which non-residents by 5.3%, on the contrary residents went down by 0.2%. In total, more guests arrived by 5.0%, of which foreigners by 5.7% and residents by 3.9% more. During the whole year 2011 collective accommodation establishments reported a higher number of overnight stays by 3.5% and the number of guest increased by 5.7%.

In December 2011, industrial production increased at constant prices by 2.0%, year-on-year. Compared to the previous month seasonally adjusted industrial production decreased by 0.8%. The value of new orders decreased by 1.2%, y-o-y.
In 2011, industrial production increased by 6.9%, y-o-y. The value of new orders was higher by 5.4%.

In Q4 2011, seasonally adjusted sales in services stagnated, quarter-on-quarter, at constant prices. After working day adjustment they dropped by 2.2%, year-on-year, without adjustment by 2.6%. The overall development was influenced the most by decrease of sales in services in professional, scientific and technical activities. For the entire year 2011, sales in services decreased by 1.5%, y-o-y.

In December 2011 the construction output grew by 14.6%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in real terms. When seasonally adjusted the construction output was by 5.5% higher, month-on month (m-o-m). The planning and building control authorities granted by 0.8% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions plummeted by 27.3%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings was down by 12.2%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings decreased by 5.9%, y-o-y.

The total employment in Q4 2011 decreased by 3.3 thousand persons compared to the same period of 2010, the employment rate of the aged 15-64 years reached 66.1% and grew by 0.6 percentage point (p.p.), year-on-year (y-o-y). The number of the unemployed according to the ILO methodology dropped by 25.1 thousand persons, y-o-y; the number of the long-term unemployed was reduced by 15.9 thousand persons. The general unemployment rate of the aged 15-64 years dropped by 0.5 p.p. to 6.5%, y-o-y.

In December, sales in retail trade including automotive segment after seasonal and working day adjustment increased at constant prices by 0.5%, month-on-month. Only working days adjusted sales increased by 3.3%, year-on-year. The y-o-y increase of non-adjusted sales by 1.6% was the most contributed to by sale of non-food goods and motor vehicles.

Price Index 24 percent higher on average than 2010
WASHINGTON, January 31, 2012—Global food prices declined 8 percent between September and December of 2011 due to increasing supplies and uncertainty about the global economy, but still remain volatile and high with the 2011 annual index 24 percent higher than its average in 2010, according to the World Bank Group’s latest Food Price Watch.
While the first quarter of 2011 witnessed sharp increases, five consecutive months of decreases at the end of the year drove the World Bank Food Price Index 7 percent below the December 2010 levels, and 14 percent lower than its February peak. Nevertheless, global prices remain high with the 2011 annual index averaging at 210 points against 169 points average in 2010.
